Moncharm | Château Le Petit Haut Lafitte 2009
A beautifully elegant and inviting wine from the House Smith Haut Lafitte, the 2009 label is nothing short of a treat for the senses, incorporating a nose and palate of spices, chocolate, currant and dark tobacco. This full bodied wine is approachable now, and should be the best sometime around 2018.
The House Smith Haut Lafitte has an illustrious history of over 800 years, starting off as part of the Du Boscq holdings in the Graves region. It was bought out by George Smith in 1720, who added his name to the mix. Today, it is owned and managed by Daniel and Florence Cathiard, both Olympic athletes. It is one of the few Bordeaux wine estates that still produces both red and white wines.
The region takes its name from the unique blend of soils that consist of gravel and stone, below which, one can find layers of sand, hardpan and clay. Covered by pine trees, the Pessac Leognan and Graves region vines are thus protected from humidity and winds, and the higher temperatures ensure rich and complex wines for the ages.
